A Cartesian grid embedded boundary method for solving the Poisson and heat equations with discontinuous coefficients in three dimensions

چکیده
We present a method for solving Poisson and heat equations with discontinuous coefficients in twoand three-dimensions. It uses a Cartesian cutcell/embedded boundary method to represent the interface between materials, as described in Johansen & Colella (1998). Matching conditions across the interface are enforced using an approximation to fluxes at the boundary. Overall second order accuracy is achieved, as indicated by an array of tests using non-trivial interface geometries. Both the elliptic and heat solvers are shown to remain stable and efficient for material coefficient contrasts up to 10, thanks in part to the use of geometric multigrid. A test of accuracy when adaptive mesh refinement capabilities are utilized is also performed. An example problem relevant to nuclear reactor core simulation is presented, demonstrating the ability of the method to solve problems with realistic physical parameters.

A Cartesian Embedded Boundary Method for the Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations
In this paper, we present an unsplit method for the time-dependent compressible Navier-Stokes equations in two and three dimensions. We use a a conservative, second-order Godunov algorithm. We use a Cartesian grid, embedded boundary method to resolve complex boundaries. We solve for viscous and conductive terms with a second-order semiimplicit algorithm. We demonstrate second-order accuracy in ...
متن کاملA class of Cartesian grid embedded boundary algorithms for incompressible flow with time-varying complex geometries
We present a class of numerical algorithms for simulating viscous fluid problems of incompressible flow interacting with moving rigid structures. The proposed Cartesian grid embedded boundary algorithms employ a slightly different idea from the traditional direct-forcing Immersed Boundary Methods; i.e. the proposed algorithms calculate and apply the force-density in the extended solid domain to...
متن کاملA cartesian grid finite volume method for the solution of the Poisson equation with variable coefficients and embedded interfaces
We present a finite volume method for the solution of the two-dimensional Poisson equation ∇· (β(x)∇u(x)) = f(x) with variable, discontinuous coefficients and solution discontinuities on irregular domains. The method uses bilinear ansatz functions on Cartesian grids for the solution u(x) resulting in a compact nine-point stencil. The resulting linear problem has been solved with a standard mult...
متن کاملA Neumann-Neumann preconditioned iterative substructuring approach for computing solutions to Poisson's equation with prescribed jumps on an embedded boundary
In multifluid problems with surface tension the fluid pressure and its derivative are discontinuous at fluid interfaces. We present a Cartesian grid embedded boundary method for numerically resolving these discontinuities in which we use Neumann–Neumann preconditioned iterative substructuring to solve the governing equations. We validate this method by computing several well-known Poisson probl...
متن کاملA discontinuous Galerkin method for solutions of the Euler equations on Cartesian grids with embedded geometries
We present a discontinuous Galerkin method (DGM) for solutions of the Euler equations on Cartesian grids with embedded geometries. Cartesian grid methods can provide considerable computational savings for computationally intensive schemes like the DGM. Cartesian mesh generation is also simplified compared to the body fitted meshes. However, cutting an embedded geometry out of the grid creates c...
